Port Hedland is a large coastal town in the Pilbarra region approximately 1700 km road trip from Perth or 2 hour flight. It has warm to very hot weather and is a top fishing location. The main activity of the very large working port is export of salt and iron ore.
Port Hedland lies on an inlet fringed with mangroves and has a number of tidal creeks feeding its shallow natural harbour. Good fishing can be had in the harbour while watching bulk carrier ships come and go from port. A wide variety of fish can be caught.
The tidal range in the area is huge - up to 11m - so it's important to check the tides when planning to launch a boat. |

The tidal flows create good but ever changing fishing spots. The patterns formed on the tidal flats by the outgoing tide are remarkable. Wading in the area can be dangerous - stonefish, rays and sharks.
Offshore fishing is excellent. Game fishing for Marlin, Sailfish and Mackerel is popular with locals. A long series of channel markers provide an obvious and very effective set of FADs.
A big attraction of the area is Eighty Mile Beach situated almost half way between Broome and Port Hedland. |

It has great land based fishing in breathtaking scenery - white sands and intense blue seas. The beach stretches off to the horizon in both directions. There is a caravan park on the beach located 250 km north of Port Hedland.
Due to the resources and industrial activity in Port Hedland, accommodation can be at a premium, although there is camping, backpacking and budget accommodation around.
