Shark Bay is World Heritage area with white sandy beaches, crystal clear aquamarine waters made up of vast areas of sandflats and seagrass beds, supporting dugongs as well as an amazing array of marine life.

It is most famous with tourists for the shallow water dolphin experience at Monkey Mia however, offshore fishing has become one of Shark Bay's biggest tourist draw cards, to the extent that the snapper fishery has been overfished to near collapse.

Thankfully the populations of other fish species less desireble for the "whack 'em in the esky" brigade are still relatively healthy, providing good flyfishing opportunities. Trailer boats can be launched from Nanga, Denham and Monkey Mia.

The scientifically-important seagrass banks form an important part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and are prime dugong habitat - boaters should take special care to keep a lookout for dugongs and obey all applicable regulations and marine reserves.

Fishing is generally good all year round however wind is a deciding factor in where and when one can fish. The Southerly can blow over 20 knots for weeks at a time.

Several conventional and game charter fishing boats operate in the area.
