Brisbane is a clean, modern city that is home to many keen fly anglers -and for good reason. Brisbane is perfectly situated in SE Queensland with a host of locations from Moolooaba in the North, to the Gold Coast in the South. Directly to the East of Brisbane is the expansive area of Moreton Bay and South Stradbroke Island. Fishing in Moreton Bay is best achieved with a boat, although shore based access is possible at various marinas, rock walls, jetties and similar structures which usually have deeper water.
Large parts of Moreton Bay are too shallow to fish effectively. It is a complex system of islands, beaches, reefs, and sea-grass beds providing environmentally valuable habitat for dugongs, turtles and migratory shorebirds. |

The deeper waters play host to migrating humpbacks during their breeding season. Boating is popular and generally safe, but out on the bay the wind can whip up a significant chop. Dangerous conditions can arise at the bar entrances at Caloundra, South Passage, Jumpinin, and Southport Seaway. The offshore islands, Moreton Island and North Stradbroke island can be reached from Moreton Bay.
The range of habitat and water depth provides all kinds of fishing opportunities. Local fly anglers like to hunt the deeper inshore and offshore zones for longtail tuna, cobia, trevally, spotted mackerel, mackerel tuna, and other pelagics. Shipping lane beacons act as FADs for baitfish and are therefore often home large predators as well. |

Fishing is good all year round, but pelagic activity is at it's best during late summer to early winter. Moreton Bay is serviced by numerous boat ramps. Nearby Brisbane provides all the amenities and services any visitor could require.
